Tracking the operation of Italy's steel industry under the epidemic

Steel industry

According to Mysteel, the Taranto steel industry area located in southeastern Italy has not been directly affected by the epidemic, and the country's largest steel mill, Ilva, is still operating normally. Before the completion of environmental equipment renovation, the company's current crude steel production capacity is limited to 6 million tons per year.

The second largest sheet metal production company in Italy, Arvedi Steel Company, also maintains normal production. Although the steel plant is located in the northern city of Cremona in the Lombardy region of Italy, it does not belong to the "red zone", and there are currently no clear restrictions on personnel access and transportation of raw materials and finished products. It is reported that the world's first ESP production line was completed and put into operation at Alvidi Steel Plant in 2009. Due to its energy-saving and efficient steel rolling process, it has been widely introduced by large steel mills in China.

Marcegalia, a large steel processing company also located in northern Italy, issued a statement stating that the company is still operating normally and also requiring employees to minimize their outings, with some working from home.

automotive industry

Turin, located in the Piemonte region, which is affected by the pandemic lockdown, is a major automotive industry center in Europe, as well as the industrial center and third largest city in Italy.

The city of Turin, where the headquarters of car manufacturer Fiat Chrysler is located, is the administrative center of the northern province of Piedmont in Italy. At present, Fiat has taken measures to restrict personnel from entering the factory, which means that those who have been near the town of Cordono in Italy or have had contact with residents from the outbreak area within 15 days are not allowed to enter the factory. At present, Fiat's factory located in Italy has not shown any signs of shutdown, while overseas factories are still affected by the epidemic. On February 20th, Fiat announced that due to a shortage of parts from China, production of some Fiat models in its Serbian factory has been temporarily suspended.

Other industries

According to relevant departments in Italy, over 70% of bookings in the country's tourism market have been cancelled, and bookings for Easter and summer vacation are also significantly decreasing. The cancellation rate of the Roman tourism industry reached 90% in March. In less than a week since the epidemic warning was sounded, the March travel booking funds of Italian hotels, homestays, travel agencies, and others have evaporated by about 200 million euros, which is a huge blow to Italy, whose tourism industry accounts for 13% of its gross domestic product.

In addition, the performance and film industry in Italy have also been directly affected. The famous Milan Scala Opera House in Italy announced through official Facebook that all recent performances in the theater will be suspended. The Italian government announced the closure of 850 cinemas in the country, accounting for 45% of its total number of cinemas.

summary

Data shows that Italy's GDP only grew by 0.2% last year, performing the worst in the European Union. At the end of the year, its GDP growth rate even declined. Prior to the outbreak, the Italian government had predicted a GDP growth rate of 0.6% in 2020 and a growth rate of 0.4% for the European Commission. The sudden outbreak of the epidemic has further exacerbated Italy's already declining economic situation.
